Note: The stakes were high for this game. If the Weasels won, they would finish first place for the Spring 2003 season. If they lost by 1 run, then they would finish second place. And if they lost by more than 2 runs, then they would finish third place. Only first and second place are eligible to play in the post-season tournament, and although a 1-run loss would give them second place, the Weasels really were aiming for their first first-place finish since the Spring 2001 season. The previous day the Weasels had been faced with a problem -- John had hurt his shoulder in the game on Thursday. He was scheduled to play shortstop in this game, but he wasn't sure if he'd be able to swing a bat or throw a ball. Fortunately Cory was available to sub for him and play shortstop. John felt good enough to bat at game time, so he played DH for most of the game (and based on his hitting, you wouldn't know his shoulder had been hurt). All of the Weasels showed up early for the game, and were ready to go when the previous game finished. The Weasels scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning and held the Flamingoes scoreless in the bottom of the first. The second inning played out similarly, with the Weasels managing 2 runs and holding the Flamingoes scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. The shut-out was broken up when the Flamingoes scored a single run an inning or two later, bringing the score to 7-1. The Flamingoes hit the ball well in the next inning, and closed the gap to 7-5. The Weasels responded by scoring 7 runs, before taking the field to face the Flamingoes in the bottom half of the inning, with only a couple minutes left on the clock. The Flamingoes eked out another run, but then popped out to Cory for the final out of the game, giving the Weasels first place in the league! Everyone contributed to this victory with their hustle, good defense, agressive baserunning, and clutch hitting. Eric pitched very well and got an in-the-park homerun. Cory also got an in-the-park homerun, and played spectacular defense at shortstop. Julienne was solid at second base, fielding well and making some nice plays at second base. The entire outfield did well, catching most everything that was catchable, stopping the ground balls well, and getting the ball in quickly. It was rare for an opposing hitter to reach second base on an outfield hit, thanks to the fast turnaround. Azzy was hitting the ball very well and was robbed of multiple great line drives to left field. Every Weasel reached base, and this victory was definitely a team effort. Congratulations, Ice Weasels, Spring 2003 season champions! Thanks to Azzy, Julienne, and Cory for subbing.
